Dubai with Kids

Dubai was essentially designed for families with money. Every attraction has a kids' version. Every mall has a play area. Every hotel has a kids' club. The challenge is not finding things to do with children. It is choosing between the thirty options within a 10-minute drive.

The headline attractions are the obvious starting point. Atlantis Aquaventure (AED 299) is one of the best waterparks in the world, with slides for every age and a private beach. The Dubai Mall has a free aquarium viewing panel, KidZania (AED 185, a miniature city where kids do adult jobs), and an ice rink (AED 80). The Dubai Frame (AED 50) has a glass floor that thrills kids and terrifies parents. La Mer Beach has free playgrounds, splash pads, and food trucks.

But the real family advantage of Dubai is the infrastructure. Taxis are cheap and metered. The metro is clean and air-conditioned. Every restaurant is used to children. The hotel kids' clubs are often excellent, giving parents a few hours of adult time. And the city is safe, clean, and efficient in a way that makes travelling with children significantly less stressful than in many other destinations.

Top Family Activities

1

Atlantis Aquaventure (AED 299)

One of the best waterparks in the world. The Leap of Faith slide, the 2.3 km lazy river, the private beach, and the Lost Chambers Aquarium are all included. Full day. Go on a weekday for shorter queues. Kids under 1.2m have dedicated zones.

2

Dubai Mall Aquarium (free viewing, AED 159 tunnel)

The viewing panel from the mall floor is free and enormous. The tunnel walkthrough (AED 159 family pass) puts kids inside the tank with sharks and rays overhead. The underwater zoo upstairs has penguins, otters, and crocodiles.

3

KidZania Dubai (AED 185 child, AED 85 adult)

A miniature city inside the Dubai Mall where children ages 4-16 role-play adult jobs: firefighter, surgeon, pilot, chef. Kids earn currency and spend it at shops. Keeps children engaged for 3-4 hours.

4

La Mer Beach (free)

Free beach access, playgrounds, splash pads, and food trucks. Laguna Waterpark on-site (AED 99) for a smaller water play option. Good for all ages.

5

Dubai Frame (AED 50)

Kids love the glass floor on the sky deck (150 metres up). The museum in the base is engaging and the elevator ride is exciting. Quick visit (60-90 minutes) that works well combined with other activities.

6

Global Village (AED 25, seasonal Oct-Apr)

A chaotic, colourful theme park meets world food market. Rides (AED 15-30 each), food from 90 countries, and cultural pavilions. The energy is festive and kids love the sensory overload. Evening activity (opens 4 PM).

7

Dubai Fountain (free)

The choreographed water show every 30 minutes from 6 PM is free and genuinely exciting for kids. The water jets reach 150 metres. Best viewed from the Souk Al Bahar promenade.

The Temperature Factor

Between October and April, outdoor activities work all day. The beaches, parks, and outdoor attractions are comfortable from morning to evening, with temperatures between 20-30C.

Between May and September, plan outdoor time before 9 AM or after 5 PM and fill the middle of the day with malls, aquariums, and indoor parks. This is not optional. Heat exhaustion in Dubai summer is a real risk for children. Temperatures reach 40-50C with high humidity, and even adults find it challenging.

The silver lining of summer is that everything is air-conditioned to a level that borders on aggressive. Malls, museums, attractions, taxis, and metro stations are all cool. Bring a light layer for children who get cold easily in the AC.

Survival Tips for Parents

Book hotel kids' clubs for at least one evening so parents can have a proper dinner

The Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates both have multi-level play areas and family lounges with changing facilities

Bring sunscreen and reapply constantly, even in winter. The desert sun is stronger than you expect

The metro Gold class (AED 6 per ride) is worth the upgrade with kids for the guaranteed seating

Atlantis Aquaventure needs a full day. Do not try to combine it with other major activities

Kite Beach has the best family infrastructure: playgrounds, food trucks, and the Burj Al Arab in the background

Many Dubai restaurants close between 3-6 PM. Plan lunch before 3 PM or snack through the afternoon

The abra boat crossing (AED 1) is a hit with kids but hold hands as the boats are open and wobble
