Berlin
Island neighborhood, Hauptbahnhof gateway, Turkish market hall, Spree riverbank, local and quiet
Moabit is technically an island, bounded by the Spree river and the Berlin-Spandau canal, and it feels like one: self-contained, unhurried, and surprisingly overlooked given that Hauptbahnhof, Berlin's massive main train station, sits on its eastern edge. Most visitors pass through Moabit without realizing it is a neighborhood worth stopping in.
The Arminiusmarkthalle is the local anchor, a 19th-century market hall with butchers, fishmongers, a Turkish grocery, a wine bar, and some of the best lunch deals in the city. Thursday evenings the hall hosts a Street Food market that rivals Kreuzberg's Markthalle Neun at a fraction of the crowds. Turmstrasse, the main commercial street, has an honest, workaday character: Turkish bakeries, Vietnamese noodle shops, hardware stores, and the kind of corner bars where regulars know each other's names.
The Spree riverbank walk from Hauptbahnhof west through Moabit is one of Berlin's most peaceful urban walks. The Fritz Schlosser Park has a playground and grilling areas that fill up on summer evenings. The neighborhood's isolation means it has developed its own rhythm, separate from the tourist circuits and nightlife corridors. If you are staying near Hauptbahnhof and want to eat dinner like a local rather than at a train station chain, walk ten minutes into Moabit.
