Best of Old Dubai: A Walking Guide

Al Fahidi to the Gold Souk in 7 stops and an AED 1 boat ride

6 min readMarch 2026By DAIZ Editorial

The walk from Al Fahidi to the Gold Souk crosses the Creek by abra, covers two centuries of Dubai history, and costs AED 5 total. It is the best half-day in the city.

The Route

This walk starts in Bur Dubai at the oldest neighbourhood in the city and crosses the Creek by wooden water taxi to Deira's souk district. The whole route takes 3-4 hours at a relaxed pace, costs a total of AED 5 in entry fees and transport, and covers two centuries of Dubai history in a morning.

Start early. The galleries open at 10 AM and the souks are best in the morning before the midday heat. By 1 PM you will be in the Gold Souk with an appetite, which is perfect because there are excellent lunch spots on both sides of the Creek.

Green Line to Al Fahidi station. Exit and walk 3 minutes to the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood entrance. The entire walk is flat and the distances are short, but wear comfortable shoes and bring water.

7 Stops

1

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood

Start here when the galleries open at 10 AM. The wind-tower houses from the 1890s are restored and beautiful in the morning light. Walk the narrow lanes, peek into the galleries (all free), and stop at the XVA Cafe for Arabic coffee in the courtyard. The Coffee Museum and Coins Museum are both free and worth 15 minutes each.

2

Dubai Museum (AED 3)

A 2-minute walk from Al Fahidi. Inside Al Fahidi Fort (1787), the oldest building in Dubai. The underground dioramas of pre-oil life, pearl diving, and Creek trading are surprisingly good for AED 3. Allow 30 minutes. The fort courtyard has traditional boats and a wind-tower reconstruction.

3

Textile Souk

Walk from the museum toward the Creek and you will pass through the textile souk: fabric shops, scarf vendors, and pashmina sellers in covered alleyways. The haggling is gentler here than at the Gold Souk. Good for lightweight gifts (scarves from AED 20-50). The alley leads to the abra station.

4

Abra Crossing (AED 1)

AED 1 buys you a wooden boat ride across the Creek with the skyline behind you and the souk in front. It takes 5 minutes and it is the best value in Dubai by a factor of about a thousand compared to everything else. No tickets needed, just step on the boat and pay the driver. The crossing operates from early morning until 11 PM.

5

Spice Souk

Step off the abra at the Deira Old Souk station and follow your nose. Saffron, cardamom, frankincense, dried lemons, and spice blends in burlap sacks. The vendors are friendly and will let you smell everything. Saffron is dramatically cheaper here than in Europe (AED 30-50 for a bag that costs EUR40+ back home). The Perfume Souk is a 3-minute walk.

6

Gold Souk

A 2-minute walk from the Spice Souk through covered alleyways. Over 200 shops with window displays that could fund a small country. Prices are based on the daily gold rate plus craftsmanship markup. Haggling is expected: start at 50%, settle around 65-75%. Walk away if the price does not move. No obligation to buy. The spectacle is free.

7

Deira Waterfront

Walk from the Gold Souk toward the Creek waterfront. The dhows (traditional wooden cargo boats) still line the bank, still used for trade with Iran and East Africa. At sunset, the light across the water with the skyline behind is the photograph that tells the real Dubai story. The waterfront has benches and is a good place to rest before heading to lunch.

Where to Eat Along the Route

XVA Cafe

Bur Dubai

Inside the XVA Art Hotel in Al Fahidi. The best coffee in Old Dubai, served in a courtyard surrounded by wind-tower walls. Light meals and pastries. AED 25-45.

Go early before the galleries open for a quiet breakfast.

Arabian Tea House

Bur Dubai

Traditional Emirati food in a restored Al Fahidi courtyard. Machboos, luqaimat, Arabic coffee with dates. The setting is the draw: fairy lights, traditional furniture, wind towers above. AED 40-70 for mains.

The Arabic breakfast platter (AED 45) is perfect for a mid-morning break.

Al Ustad Special Kebab

Bur Dubai

Iranian chelo kebab since 1978. AED 35-55 for the best lamb kubideh in the city. Cross back to Bur Dubai by abra for this, or eat on the Deira side first.

Lunch is less busy than dinner. The doogh (yogurt drink) is the right pairing.

Sind Punjab

Deira

If you finish the walk on the Deira side, this is 10 minutes on foot from the Gold Souk. Biryani for AED 18-25 and the lunchtime thali for AED 15-20 in a no-frills setting.

Go between 12-1 PM when the lunch rush means fresh food.

Insider Tips

Green Line to Al Fahidi station is the best starting point. Taxi from Downtown costs AED 15-25.

The whole walk is flat and the distances are short (30 minutes of actual walking), but bring water and wear comfortable shoes

Best time: start at 10 AM on a Saturday to Thursday morning. Friday the souks are quieter but some galleries are closed.

The souks are covered and shaded, comfortable even in warm months. Al Fahidi is partially open-air.

Haggling etiquette: expected at the Gold Souk, gentle at the Textile Souk, not expected at the Spice Souk (prices are fair). At the Gold Souk: start at 50% of asking, settle around 65-75%.

The abra runs until 11 PM, so you can do this walk in the evening for completely different lighting and atmosphere

Photography: fine everywhere in the souks and Al Fahidi. Ask before photographing people, especially women.
