San Sebastian
The surfer and local neighbourhood east of the Urumea river: Zurriola beach with Atlantic surf, the Kursaal glass cubes, and pintxo bars with shorter queues and more regular clients than the old town.
Gros is the neighbourhood east of the Urumea river, connected to the Parte Vieja by the Zurriola bridge. Zurriola beach faces the open Bay of Biscay and gets Atlantic swells that make it the surf beach of the city. The Kursaal conference centre (two glass cubes designed by Rafael Moneo, completed 1999) sits on the east end of Zurriola: it hosts the San Sebastian Film Festival every September and is the most significant piece of contemporary architecture in the city. The Gros pintxo bars are a genuine alternative to the Parte Vieja: Hidalgo 56 (Calle de Fuenterrabia 56), Bodega Donostiarra, and the bars around Calle del General Arteche have loyal local clientele, comparable pintxo quality, and are significantly less crowded on Friday and Saturday evenings when the Parte Vieja is at maximum capacity.

Operating since 1928, this traditional bodega serves pintxos from large glass counters filled with mountains of cured meats, anchovies, and preserved peppers. The jamon iberico de bellota is sliced by hand and the cider is poured from barrels.

Craft beer bar in Gros serving 16 rotating taps of Spanish and international beers, paired with elevated pintxos. The pulled pork bao and the beef brisket sandwich show American BBQ influences adapted to Basque tastes.
Bus 5/28 from the centre. Walk across Zurriola bridge from Parte Vieja (5 min).
Flat and easy. The beach and main streets are all walkable.
When the Parte Vieja is at full weekend capacity (Saturday evenings in summer, the Film Festival week in September), cross the Zurriola bridge to Gros. The pintxo bars here have shorter queues, comparable quality, and more space at the counter. Hidalgo 56 and Bodega Donostiarra are the most consistently recommended by locals who live in the neighbourhood.
The break at Zurriola works best in autumn (September-November) and winter (December-February). Summer waves are smaller and more suitable for beginners. Surf schools on the beach offer 2-hour group lessons for EUR 35-50 including board and wetsuit (wetsuits are necessary year-round: the Bay of Biscay water temperature is 18-20C in summer, 12-14C in winter).
