Berlin
LGBTQ+ history, Winterfeldtplatz market, David Bowie's old neighborhood, understated local charm
Schoneberg is the Berlin neighborhood that does not try to impress you, which is exactly why it impresses you. This is where David Bowie and Iggy Pop lived in the late 1970s (Hauptstrasse 155, a plaque marks the spot), where Christopher Isherwood wrote the stories that became Cabaret, and where the modern LGBTQ+ movement in Germany found its home around Nollendorfplatz.
The heart of the neighborhood is Winterfeldtplatz, where the Saturday market (8 AM - 4 PM) is one of Berlin's best: organic produce, artisan cheese, street food, flowers, and vintage clothes. The surrounding streets have a quietly excellent food scene. Akazienstrasse has independent restaurants that cater to regulars, not Instagram. The vintage shops along Goltzstrasse and Maasenstrasse are where Berliners actually buy second-hand clothes, not the tourist-facing shops in Mitte.
Nollendorfplatz is the historic center of Berlin's gay community, with bars, clubs, and cafes that have been here for decades. The pink triangle memorial at Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn station commemorates LGBTQ+ victims of the Nazis. Schoneberg is quieter than Kreuzberg, less polished than Prenzlauer Berg, and more interesting than either if you give it time.
